Woman arrested for abusing nephew

KUCHING: Police arrested a baby sitter at a house in Matang Jaya who is believed to have abused a child and caused the victim to fall into a coma.

Padawan District Police chief Superinten­dent Aidil Bolhassan said the 57-year- old woman was the baby’s aunt. She was arrested by Crime Investigat­ion Department officers led by Inspector Mohamad Rafi.

“The suspect was arrested around 1.45am ( yesterday) at a house in Matang Jaya and we are in the process of remand applicatio­n to further investigat­e the case under the Children Act 2001.

“Early investigat­ions showed that the suspect is the cousin of the baby’s father,” he said when contacted yesterday.

On Tuesday, the baby boy was sent to the Intensive Care Unit at Sarawak General Hospital for serious head injuries suspected to have been due to abuse by the baby sitter.

Sources said the baby was rushed to the hospital by his parents after he suddenly fell unconsciou­s.

Sources also said the victim was found to have sustained brain and eye injuries. The victim was under the care of the baby sitter in Taman Yen Yen, Matang.

The hospital has lodged a police report.

Meanwhile, the ICU reported that the baby was still in a coma and his condition unstable.
