‘Play your part in uniting community’

KUCHING: Sarawakian Kayan women are advised to play a crucial role in uniting and taking care of their community.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said they must understand that they also have obligations to their community, which is relatively small compared to other communities in the state.

Thus he hoped that Kayan associations such as the Sarawak Kayan Association of which he is the president and the Sarawak Kayan Women’s Association will find ways to contribute to the community such as by organising more activities.

He also advised the Kayan associations to be conscious of whatever is happening in their community.

He said there might be members of the community who need help or guidance, especially those who are far away from their families.

“I am willing to help them

I am willing to help them (Kayan associations) in whatever ways possible I can. It is one of my priorities as I am a member of the community too.

Dennis was guest of honour at a Christmas and New Year dinner organised by the Sarawak Kayan Women’s Association at a hotel here.

Although he acknowledged that there were divisions in the community, he hoped that one day his community would be united and said he would not stop until it happened.

Being small, he said the Kayan community in the state should not have divisions and members should be thinking of ways to develop the community instead of fighting with each other.

“To those who did not attend the dinner today ( Saturday), we (those who attended the dinner) should not get angry at them. We wish them all the best as they are members of our community as well,” he said.

Dennis however believed that the community would one day understand the need to unite in order for the Kayans of Sarawak to enjoy development.

At the end of his speech, he pledged RM20,000 in MRP fund to the Sarawak Kayan Women’s Association to help the association with its future activities.

Sarawak Kayan Women’s Association chairperson Roselyn Long Lah was among members of the association attending the dinner.
