Co-op style ventures can be lucrative — MP
MIRI: Malaysians should consider venturing into business endeavours run on a cooperative concept, which has proven to be successful through proper management.
Sibuti MP Ahmad Lai Bujang, quoting a study by International Cooperative Alliance ( ICA) based on World Cooperative Monitor 2016, said the turnover of the global top 300 cooperatives was US$ 2.5 billion.
“The ‘Cooperative and Employment: A Global Report’ shows that the cooperative movement is able to generate 250 million job opportunities worldwide.
“Based on these figures and related practices, the cooperative movement is an important mechanism or best business model to counter various challenges in society, economy and environment,” he said at the closing of a half-day programme on ‘Training Promotion of Malaysian

Ahmad Lai said for any cooperative to be successful, it must effectively address and manage four main challenges spelled out under the ‘ Blueprint for A Cooperative Decade’.
“The four are financial instability, increasing differences, growing gap of global management and lack interest in the cooperative movement among the younger generation.”
The parliamentarian said there must be concerted efforts towards developing an innovative culture that made full use of the digital revolution and would contribute back to the community.
Earlier, CCM Sarawak director Siti Maimunah Jerni said the training promotion programme, which emphasised on budget hotels, was part of the efforts by the institution to encourage more people to be involved in the cooperative movement.
“We hope that the people would make full use of the financial assistance towards developing the cooperative movement. Currently, there is a RM10-million government grant set aside for the development of budget hotels.”
Siti Maimunah said that similar series of training would be held in other parts of the state throughout this year.
The session here gathered 200 people including Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau and CCM Miri assistant director Ibrahim Hossin.
Additionally, a similar training was conducted simultaneously in Sibu yesterday, involving 90 participants.
