BINTULU: A total of 7,371 recipients from the Chinese community throughout the state will receive RM100 and a hamper worth RM50 each under the ‘Sejambak Kasih’ programme held in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration.

Minister of Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing Datuk Fatimah Abdullah yesterday kicked off the programme in Bintulu.

A total of 200 recipients here were entitled to receive the contribution from the state Welfare Department.

“The programme shows the state government doesn’t compromise when it comes to the welfare of the people even during this current challenging economic situation,” she said, adding the priority was always on the people’s wellbeing.

She also hoped that this contribution would bring cheer to those in the less fortunate groups in their preparation for the CNY celebration.

“For those who can’t attend today’s event, like those who live far from here, the money will be credited into their respective bank accounts,” Fatimah said.

For the record, the Welfare Dept has distributed RM190,715,550 to 57,047 monthly assistance recipients in the state in the whole of last year. Here (in Bintulu) there are 1,599 of such recipients, followed by Tatau ( 800), Sebauh (731) and Sg Asap Belaga (373) who have received a total of RM11,693,550.

Temenggong Datuk Barry Yek Siew Hui, Pemanca Francis Toh, police chief Supt Zailanni Amit, Bintulu Development Authority general manager Rodziah Morshidi and other Chinese community leaders were among those present at the function yesterday.
