10th Battalion Royal Ranger Regiment celebrates 37th anniversary
KUCHING: The 10th Battalion Royal Ranger Regiment celebrated its 37th anniversary in a colourful ceremony at Muara Tuang Camp in Kota Samarahan, yesterday.
The ceremony was officiated at by its commanding officer Lt Col Azman Zainuddin. He was accompanied by assistant commanding officer Major Saiful Fitri Mat Rashid, operations officer Major Paul Ondahal and Sergeant Major (PW1) Jabun Lajang.
The battalion was established on Jan 1, 1980 with two officers and 22 personnel of other ranks headed by Lt Col Mohd Joharu Selan.
Its first placement was in Bau before receiving its operation status on Jan 3, 1981 and was assigned to conduct ‘Operasi Kris Parang/Gabungan’ in Lundu.
The regiment has been involved in various operations nationwide from Jan 15, 1981 to March 5, 1981, to include ‘Operasi Kemudi Satu’ in West Kalimantan, ‘ Operasi Idaman Tiga’ in Kanowit, ‘Operasi Kota Echo’ in Klian Intan, Perak and ‘Operasi Bersih III’ at the Malaysia-Thailand border.
The regiment has also shown excellence in training and sports.
However, the government has reduced the strength level of the army which resulted in the regiment to be absorbed into other battalions.
The 10th Battalion Royal Ranger Regiment was dissolved during the Beating Retreat ceremony on July 12, 1995 at Oya Camp in Sibu by the then army chief Dato Che Md Noor Mat Arshad.
In line with the wish of the army top leadership to complete the 3rd Malaysian Infantry with three battalions, the 10th Battalion Royal Ranger Regiment was reestablished on Oct 1, 2009 with the recruitment implemented in stages until 2015. According to Azman, the excellent achievement of the battalion inherited since its establishment till its reestablishment was a blessing.
Since it was given the status of operation on May 1, 2015, the regiment has proven its capability of defending the country.
