Crucial to raise awareness of Socso schemes, benefits among employees — Pol-sec

-

SARIKEI: Many employees here are still not fully aware of the privileges and compensation available under Social Security Organisation (Socso).

In this regard, political secretary to the chief minister Teng Ung Woo feels that nongovernmental organisations ( NGOs) and associations hold the responsibility to help in raising the awareness among employees of the matter, especially on the rights for them or their next- ofkin to claim compensation in the event of accidents or death.

“The most important thing is for the employees to know that they are covered by Socso; that their employers have signed them up for the coverage,” he said after a dialogue with officers from Sarikei Socso here recently.

Teng and fellow Youth members from Sarawak United Peoples’ Party ( SUPP) Sarikei branch attended the session, which was facilitated by Sarikei Perkeso officer-in- charge Fenny Lim.

“It’s great for us from SUPP Youth Sarikei to attend this dialogue, so that we could help disseminate to members of the local community the vital information about the benefits and coverage provided under Socso.

“Some of the employees here may not be well-versed about their rights as Socso contributors, especially in the submission of claims in the event of accidents. This is where we can and would like to help,” Teng said.

Meanwhile, Lim listed a number of protection coverage schemes under Perkeso during her presentation.

“For Sosco contributors and their next- of-kin, there are the Employment Injury Scheme, the Invalidity Scheme, a number of education incentives, as well as coverage for physical rehabilitation,” she said.
