KUCHING: Kuching Hope Place ( Hope Place) recently donated a wheelchair to physicallychallenged Ayai Tom, 64.

According to the founder of the non- governmental organisation, Kelvin Wan, Hope Place immediately came to Ayai’s aid upon receiving a distress call from him.

Ayai was a security guard before he was involved in an accident which rendered him paralysed.

Wan however did not elaborate on the matter.

“Currently, Ayai’s wife takes care of him on full time basis. Doris, 53, is a housewife. Ayai has already applied for help from the state Welfare Department but he is still waiting for its response,” said Wan.

Ayai stays at home with his son Zico, who himself has four children aged three to six years.

“All are still very young with the youngest child just delivered in November 2016. Zico sells vegetables daily at the E- Mart car park area and earns around RM500 monthly,” said Wan.

The family also suffers from flood-related problems during the rainy season. Their home would be flooded when the water level rises up to two feet. Every time that happens the family members would move to a flood centre. Many a times their furniture would be destroyed by the flood.

Besides the wheelchair, Ayai also received foodstuffs in the form of rice, cooking oil, Milo, salt, sugar, biscuit and noodles, and a mattress from Hope Place.

Wan was accompanied by staff Yong Tiong Yieng to deliver the donation.

On a separate matter, Hope Place said it is still short of children’s XXL- size diapers as well as Ensure, Enercal, Appenton, Nestle Nutren Diabetik and Sustagen6+ ( Vanilla) milk powder.

“All these foods are for the disabled elderly,” said Wan.

Wan also said Hope Place was still short of Milo (1kg pack), biscuits and cooking oil.

Hope Place visits the poor and less fortunate families to bring them essential food items. It can be reached at 013- 5672775 and 082683378 from 8.30am to noon and 2pm to 5pm on Mondays to Fridays. On Saturday the public can call it from 9am to noon only.

Those interested to make cash donation may bank the cash to Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Kuching at Maybank account 5112- 8900-1160.
