Narcotics police nab 17 suspected drug abusers in ‘Ops Tapis’

SARIKEI : Acting on informatio­n from the public, a team of 11 policemen from Sarikei District Narcotic Crime Investigat­ion Section last Wednesday arrested 17 men suspected to be drug abusers.

Deputy District police chief, DSP Dominic Josip in disclosing this during a press conference here yesterday said that three of the suspects were believed to be drug peddlers as they were found in possession of certain amount of substances believed to Syabu and nospan while 14 others were suspected drug addicts.

The team led by Sarikei District Narcotic Head, ASP Peter Salang first arrested a 39-year old man in a house in Kampung Urai, Daro and found in his possession 25 straws containing crystal substance wrapped in two transparen­t plastic bags.

The substance believed to be syabu weighed about 5.16 grammes, he said.

The arrest led them to a house in Jalan Kampung Bandung Daro where they arrested a 30-year old man and found in his possession about 28.8 grammes of crystal substance also suspected to be Syabu wrapped in plastic bag, he further disclosed.

On the same day, the team picked another man, aged 33 years in front of a house in Kampung Urai, Daro and found in his possession 24 packets each containing 9 tablets believed to be nospan kept in his waist bag.

The operation, code-named ‘Ops Tapis’ also roped in 14 men suspected to be drug addicts.

According to Dominic 10 of the suspects had so far been tested positive for drug.

The suspects are being remanded to facilitate investigat­ion for offences under section 39A(1) of Dangerous Drug Act 1952 and Poison Act 1952, he said.
