MIRI: SUPP secretary- general Datuk Sebastian Ting Chew Yew said the party fully supported newly- appointed Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg in continuing the pledges of his predecessor, saying it was about delivering the election promises as mandated.

“We entered the last state election as a member of Team Adenan and were given 87.8 per cent support of the people when he asked for five years to carry out these (pledges),” he said.

Ting was referring to the resounding mandate given to Adenan who listed out 53 principles and actions in the election manifesto which the Sarawak BN pledged to deliver to the people.

“The people and SUPP welcome the pledge by our new Chief Minister and will support him in continuing to deliver on these pledges, “he told the Borneo Post in Miri after attending the swearing-in of the state cabinet members in Kuching yesterday.

Aden a n d i e d o f h e a r t compl ications at SGH Kota Samarahan on Jan 11, barely eight months after winning the last state election on May 7 last year.

His down-to-earth approach and unflinching championing for the rights and interests of Sarawak endeared him to the people of the state and inspired admirers throughout the country.

He led BN to capturing 72 out of the 82 seats in the State Legislative Assembly, his first mandate after taking over from Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud two years earlier as the latter was appointed Head of State of Sarawak.

SUPProdeonAdenan’spopularity to bounce back after it was nearly wiped out in the previous election by the Opposition.

Ting won the Piasau state seat in a straight fight with DAP Sarawak secretary Alan Ling Sie Kiong who defeated then SUPP president Datuk Patinggi Dr George Chan Hong Nan in the previous state election as the Chinese voters deserted the party for the Opposition.

Adenan’s action in giving annual aid to Chinese primary schools in the state, fighting against corruption and several other steps had won back support from the Chinese community in the state.

He later referred to all BN candidates as ‘ Team Adenan’ as party background took a back seat in deference to Adenan’s popularity.

Among his actions which won over the Chinese community was the state government’s recognition of the Uni f ied Examination Certificate (UEC) qualification for civil service and acceptance into universities.
