Take preventive measures against HFMD and dengue fever, public advised

SIBU: The public here have been advised to take preventive measures to prevent the spread of hand, mouth and foot disease ( HFMD) and dengue fever in view of the school holidays in conjunctio­n with Chinese New Year.

Touching on HFMD, Sibu divisional health officer Dr Muhamad Rais Abdullah reminded parents not to bring young children to crowded places such as shopping malls, parks, public library, weddings, swimming pools and other public places.

“Bring along hand sanitizer when attending activities frequented by many people. Use it regularly to ensure cleanlines­s of the family.

“If your child is feeling unwell, avoid visiting relatives during the school holidays. This is to prevent the spread of the disease to other children,” he said in a statement.

Dr Muhamad Rais reminded the public to wash their hands after visiting the toilet, cough or sneeze, shaking hands, before preparing food and before meals.

Parents are advised to bring their children for medical attention if they exhibit symptoms such as fever, mouth ulcers and rashes on the palms, soles of feet or buttocks. He urged members of the public before going off for vocation to ensure their windows and doors are tightly closed.

“Properly dispose of any receptacle­s that can collect water such as tyres, empty tins, bottles, old helmets, polystyren­e containers and plastic bags.” Avoid mosquito bites by wearing long sleeves and pants or apply repellent when outdoor especially in early morning and evening (Aedes active period).

Use aerosol to mosquitoes at suggested.

Dr Muhamad Rais said it was important to ensure there were no bushes surroundin­g the house.
