Andy Lau suffers pelvic injury after falling off horse

-

HONG KONG: It’s going to be a painful Lunar New Year for actor Andy Lau, who suffered a pelvic injury after falling off a horse while filming a commercial in Thailand on Tuesday.

Lau, who was riding a horse during the shoot, fell off the horse when the animal lost control of itself. The horse then stepped on Lau’s back, causing the injury.

In a statement, his commercial production company said: “Mr Andy Lau was shooting a commercial in Thailand on Jan 17, 2017 when he had a little accident and fell off a horse, resulting in a pelvic laceration. A medical team took care of him, and all is well now. Please do not worry.”

According to Hong Kong-based Apple Daily, Andy, 55, had set off on Monday for Thailand for the filming. The report, quoting a producer in Thailand, said Andy was filming a horse-riding scene in Khao Lak, three hours by car from Bangkok, when the horse went out of control, threw him off and stepped on his waist.

Filming was halted. Because he could not walk, Andy was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He was then sent home on a medical plane to Hong Kong for more detailed treatment.

“We will update everyone with any new developments on the matter,” said Andy’s public relations spokesperson.

Andy has enjoyed tremendous stardom in the Chinese-speaking world since the 1990s. Hailed as one of the “Four Kings” of showbiz in Hong Kong, he has been working tirelessly in multiple genres, including acting and singing.

Hong Kong media first reported the story and have identified different degrees of injury. The South China Morning Post said that a horse that Andy had been riding, took fright, threw him and stepped on his back. The same paper also reported that Andy was to be flown back to Hong Kong Wednesday on a medical flight.

Andy had recently wrapped up a promotional campaign for the Zhang Yimou action movie, The Great Wall.

Last Saturday, he was in the United States for the shoot of Hong Kong film-maker Adrian Kwan’s Find Your Voice. By Sunday, he had rushed back to Hong Kong to join stars such as Jet Li, Rosamund Kwan and Sammi Cheng at movie producer Tiffany Chen’s 60th birthday bash.

In his latest online update before the accident, Andy had written: “Think about how to cherish the current resources we are enjoying, even every flower or grass outside needs our protection.”

Andy’s wife is former Malaysian model Carol Choo.
