City council encourages promotion of environmental awareness

-

MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) welcomes programmes that promote environmental awareness and cleanliness of the city as they are in line with MCC’s vision to make Miri a liveable resort city.

Miri Mayor Adam Yii said this when officiating at a gotong royong programme at Kampung Wireless yesterday.

“We have received a number of public complaints about he river and beach areas in the city being made dirty by debris as highlighted in local newspapers and social media.

“The selfish attitude of treating the river and beach areas as convenient dumpsites has tarnished the image of Miri as a clean city in the eyes of visitors,” Yii said.

There was therefore a need to intensify education to get people to keep the river and beach clean for the health and enjoyment of everyone.

He said the council and Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) had been tasked with taking care of cleanliness of the river and beaches, but they needed the public to cooperate by not littering and dumping anywhere.

“Keeping the surroundings garbage-free ensures freedom from dengue and diseases brought by pests.”

Clean surroundings equals better health and a longer life for everyone in the area.

He calls on riverine folks to play a role in keeping Miri River clean and pollution-free by not throwing garbage in it.

He welcomes government and private agencies, nongovernmental organisations and education institutions to hold more cleanliness campaigns and environmental programmes.

More than 100 people comprising volunteer students from Curtin Sarawak, representatives from government agencies and villagers joined in the gotong royong to clean the compound of Kampung Wireless.

Present were MCC acting secretary Morshidi Fredrick, village community head Jaffar Abdullah and councillors.
