Chinese community ends CNY celebration with Chap Goh Mei
MIRI: Chap Goh Mei, the Chinese equivalent of Valentine’s Day, marks the end of the 15-day Lunar New Year celebration. It is also a great time for the Chinese to take a look at their surroundings and care more for the needy and less fortunate.
Assistant Minister for Land and Air Transportation and Safety Datuk Lee Kim Shin hence called on those who are capable to give or lend a helping hand to make the life of the less fortunate people better.
“While many are enjoying the festivity with good food and drinks, there are those who suffer in poverty, sickness etc. CNY is a festivity that brings joy to the people, therefore, it is best to share the happiness with the less fortunate and spread love,” Lee told reporters after officiating at the Mandarin Orange Throwing Charity event here yesterday.
Lee lauded Boulevard Shopping Mall for its yearly charity do, saying that it would not only raise money for charitable homes, but get members of the public to participate in the event.
The annual charity event was held from 10am to 5pm, with each orange sold at RM2. Proceeds from the sales of mandarin oranges will be donated to Miri Autistic Association.
Also joining Lee were chief executive officer (CEO) of Boulevard Group of Companies Don Yew; Boulevard Shopping Mall manager Derek Ling and Cr Gilbert Chin.
After the launch, guests and members of the public got to enjoy a lion dance by Wai Sheng Lion and Dragon Troupe Academy as well as adorable 100 mini lions comprising pupils of Miri Krokop Kindergarten.
