MCCCI: CNY Bazaar an iconic draw for tourists

-

MIRI: Despite a few hiccups, this year’s CNY Bazaar attracted more tourists and city revellers to visit the annual event which is usually held a week prior to the Chinese New Year.

Chairman of Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) Lee Khoi Yun said this during the CNY Bazaar appreciation dinner on Friday.

This was the 15th year for MCCCI and Miri City Council to organise the CNY Bazaar. The public’s turnout is beyond our expectations and we are truly overwhelmed with the amount of support shown by the people, especially on the final evening of the week-long event. — Lee Khoi Yun, MCCCI chairman

“This was the 15th year for MCCCI and Miri City Council to organise the CNY Bazaar. The public turnout is beyond our expectations and we are truly overwhelmed with the amount of support shown by the people, especially on the final evening of the week-long event. To be honest, this year’s event was more or less affected by the rainy season, and such unforeseen circumstances had burdened the working committees, especially MCC’s Public Cleaning and Maintenance Section, police and Rela but they did a great job and provided a place with great ambience for the people’s enjoyment,” Lee Khoi Yun said.

He offered his encouragement to all working committee members to seek cooperation, in the hope that they could organise an even better CNY Bazaar in the year to come, which he strongly believes will promote Miri’s tourism industry.

Meanwhile, Assistant Minister for Land and Air Transportation and Safety Datuk Lee Kim Shin suggested that MCCCI members organise more tourist-friendly events.

“Being one of the most anticipated events of the year, CNY Bazaar has become an iconic event. Apart from the usual performances, perhaps it is time for us to do more research and invest more effort to bring different surprises to the audiences, because that is the best way to continue to attract people, especially tourists.”

Lee also encouraged MCCCI members who often liaise with business acquaintances in Mainland China to extend an invitation to the Chinese to visit Miri during these iconic occasions. The appreciation dinner was attended by Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting, Mayor Adam Yii and Miri District Officer Abdul Aziz Yusuf, among others.
