Kuching stop draws 100 in ‘Vans Skate Fry-Days’ tour
KUCHING: Over 100 skaters from Kuching had their chance to mingle with Vans Pro Skater in the ‘Vans Skate Fry-Days’ tour which made its third stop in Kuching on Friday.
Held at the Old Court House in collaboration with School of Skateboarding Kuching, legendary Malaysian pro skater Pa’din Musa, heads the Vans pro skater delegate together with Porock Lewis and Azrin Azman.
According to Pa’din Musa, the Kuching skate scene is definitely bigger now and expressed his fascination with the number of young skaters who emerged to show their prowess at the event.
“Kuching definitely has a well managed scene where School of Skateboarding Kuching has played good role together with other associations such as CISKA and other skate shops around the city,”
“Young skaters should utilize this opportunity to learn and most important of all, to have fun,” said Pa’din.
He advised skaters to look at the sport as a fun recreation, and not to follow trends or seek sponsors.
“What is important firsthand is you enjoy doing it, and from there you can develop into a better skater,” he said.
As one of Malaysia’s pro skaters, Pa’din’s highest achievement was to represent Malaysia at the Los Angeles X Games in 2004, where he contested against world famous skaters such as Eric Koston, Paul Rodriguez and Andrew Reynolds.
Meanwhile, Vans Malaysia assistant marketing manager Munir Muhammad said ‘Skate Fry-Days’ is a grassroots event initiative by Vans where they tour Malaysia to meet with the skating community.
“Basically it’s an opportunity for local skaters to mingle with Vans Pro Skaters. For Kuching, it is our third stop after Johor and Penang,” he said.
“We were expecting around 80 but more than 100 skaters came today and we are honoured with the response by the local Kuching skaters,” he said, adding that the tour was also a venue for Vans to scout for young talents.
Also present were School of Skateboarding Kuching president Danny Zulfikar and vice president Zulkarnien Poasa.
