Hospitals told to monitor work progress of contractors

MIRI: The management team at public hospitals must monitor the progress of contractors and terminate those who are underperforming.

In making this statement, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa said it was essential to make sure that the contractors, who tendered for the project, could bear the responsibility and complete their project within the agreed period.

“Whatever is their reason for delay, the contractor who tendered the project must be prepared in terms of human resource and finance. It is part of the integrity that must be put into practice at all times,” he said.

Touching on challenges faced by doctors, especially those in rural hospitals, Dr Ali Hamsa said these medical officers and doctors deserved a ‘hat’s off’ for their passion and sense of responsibility.

“The challenge of being a doctor, especially in public hospitals, is to deal with the many different cases and the many level of difficulties that come with it.

“To deal with this level of pressure, it is important to talk to someone who could help, psychologically, as by venting out your feelings in a positive way could help ease the mental pressure.”

Dr Ali Hamsa pointed out that housemen’s inability to cope with work pressure at public hospitals was one of the reasons they made up the biggest number amongst civil servants who were terminated from their jobs.

“Talk to the upper management or seek counselling and get someone to listen to your problems,” he said during a welfare visit programme (Program Ziarah Kebajikan Puspanita) to Miri Hospital yesterday.

By highlighting this, he reiterated the government’s concern to save the housemen whose parents had spent so much effort and money to send them to medical schools.

“It is such a waste for them to just give up. Whatever reasons leading to their inability to complete their horsemanship, I strongly believe there is a solution. Perhaps, housemen could help each other; and on top of that, senior doctors should also monitor the conditions of their housemen,” he said.

Dr Ali Hamsa, who is also the advisor to Puspanita, was joined by his wife, Puspanita president Puan Sri Datuk Rohani Abdullah; Public Service Department director-general Datuk Seri Zainal Rahim Seman; State Health Department director Dr Jamilah Hashim and Miri Hospital director Dr Jack Wong.
