‘JCI TOYM Award needs to be promoted more to create awareness among youths’

-

SIBU: The Junior Chamber International (JCI) in Sarawak has been urged to do more in promotion of the ‘ JCI Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians (TOYM) Award 2017’.

According to TOYM2016 recipient Dato’ Andrew Wong Kee Yew, the effort to promote TOYM2017 is vital because people in Sarawak, especially those who have the potential, lack exposure on what TOYM is all about.

“I believe that we Sarawakians have no shortage of potential candidates (young people) who are even better than myself to participate in this prestigious TOYM event.

“Through more promotion, by exposing the TOYM event to our young people in Sarawak, more with the potential will take part,” he added.

He was speaking at a press conference of the ‘JCI Ten Outstanding Young Malaysian ( TOYM) Award 2017 roadshow’ held at Kingwood Hotel recently.

The TOYM is a project of JCI Malaysia and JCI TOYM2017 is organised by JCI Kuala Lumpur Mandarin.

The press conference yesterday was held as an opening of nominations for JCI TOYM2017 programme. Closing date for nominations is in June.

The humble and dynamic Andrew himself was the recipient for the TOYM2016 for academic leadership and accomplishments.

Charter president of JCI Mandarin Sibu, JCI Senator Dato Dr Jimmy Tie, president of JCI Kuala Lumpur Mandarin Dato Sri Wyn See, JCI TOYM2017 organising chairman (from JCI Kuala Lumpur Mandarin) Ernest Tan, Nomination chairperson for JCI TOYM2017 June Ooi and president of JCI Mandarin Sibu Kan Wen Chess were also present.

Andrew added, as for himself, he will do his upmost best in helping to promote TOYM2017.

Meanwhile, any individual or registered organization in Malaysia can nominate any young Malaysian aged between 18 to 40, with outstanding achievements or contributions in one of the following categories namely, (1) Business, economic, and/or entrepreneurial accomplishment, ( 2) Political, legal, and/or governmental affairs, ( 3) Academic leadership and/or accomplishment, (4) Cultural achievement, ( 5) Moral and/or environmental leadership, (6) Contribution to children, world peace, and/or human rights, (7) Humanitarian and/or voluntary leadership, ( 8) Scientific and/or technological development, 9) Personal improvement and/or accomplishment and (10) Medical innovation.

The JCI TOYM Programme was launched by the JCI Malaysia in 1985 to commemorate the International Year of the Youth and then, JCI Malaysia decided to adopt the programme as part of JCI Malaysia’s annual project.

The TOYM Award is to accord recognition to young Malaysians between age of 18 to 40, whose dedication to their profession or life undertakings has resulted in exceptional achievement, in the form of significant contribution to the progress or welfare of the community at large and to the advancement in their field of endeavour.

The event is supported by The Ministry of Local Government and Community Development Sarawak.
