MIRI: Norsiah Yusok became the first woman to lead the Persatuan Bisaya Sarawak ( PBS) Tedungan sub- branch when she was elected chairwoman at its annual general meeting for the 2017– 2018 term at Tedungan yesterday.

A senior teacher from SK Tedungan in Limbang, Norsiah hoped all PBS members will close ranks and work together in activities and programmes organised by the sub- branch or PBS to realise the interest of the community.

“I’m calling on the community in Tedungan to close ranks and work with the association as to ensure the Bisaya can move forward together with other races in the state,” she said.

Norsiah noted it was not an easy task to bring members of the community together who are from different backgrounds and places; however, if they are committed and focused, she believed all obstacles can be solved.

She said PBS members at the grassroots-level must be committed to realise the goal of PBS as the main platform to champion the interest of the Bisaya community.

Norsiah expressed her desire to set up a few programmes, especially culture and dance showcases, to expose the younger generation to them.

“It is important to preserve the identity of the Bisaya among the younger generation of the community,” she said, adding that what is important is that the community must be united to strengthen the Bisaya’s progress alongside other communities in the state.

Meanwhile, the PBS Tedungan sub- branch election saw Siti Aisah Abdullah elected as secretary.

Other office bearers are Jain Mandi (assistant secretary), Sulivia Edwin (treasurer) and Henry Mekjun (assistant treasurer).

Committee members are Mandi Siput, Roselina Mohd Puasa, Fatimah Abdullah, Dayang Hasnah Abdullah and Easter Yubi while the auditor is Christina Alinah Kawang.

The advisor is Kampung Tedungan headman Edwin Yakut.

PBS exco member Augustin Pudon Enak supervised the election.
