Graduates told to be more resilient, focused

Looking for a job is easy but to find a career you love needs lot of time, patience and hard work.

KUCHING: University graduates have been advised to be more resilient and build high selfesteem in order to improve their chances of getting employment.

Chief political secretary to the Chief Minister Abdullah Saidol said that it is also important for them to be versatile and to see life differentl­y as they go through many stages of life after graduation.

“Looking for a job is easy but to find a career you love needs lot of time, patience and hard work.

“Take some time to reflect on what you want to do in life or else you may end up taking your job search in the wrong direction.

“Go out and travel to various places after your graduation to gain a broader view of the working world and ask yourself some questions that will help you get a clearer picture of what you are looking for and what kind of job can help you achieve

your career goals,” he said at the Universiti Teknologi Mara ( UiTM) Sarawak (Session 1/2017) pre-graduation dinner at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching here on Saturday.

Abdullah Saidol emphasised that there is a strong need for graduates to stay tough and focus in the working world as there will be a lot of temptation­s that they will need to deal with, including applying proper management.

“Spend your salary wisely. Do not be eager to spend money unnecessar­ily to reduce debt burden.

“It is also important for one to boost one’s credibilit­y at work by staying positive with competitiv­e mindset so as to increase personal and profession­al success and help one get ahead in one’s career,” he said, adding that one distinctiv­e quality of a good employee is the ability to master English language and acquire awesome presentati­on skills.

He also advised the younger generation to always keep their connection­s alive and make most out of it as well as to continue to be proud of themselves to have graduated from UiTM.

“As Sarawakian­s, we must financial remain united and feel blessed to be able to live in a rich multicultu­ral state.

“Embrace the uniqueness that we have here in Sarawak and do not get easily influenced by foreign cultures,” he added.

A total of 29 UiTM students received excellence awards during the dinner.

Mohd Asri Mohamad Mahmud won the best diploma student award while Raja Firdaus Raja Aziz received the best degree student award.

Meanwhile, the Sport Icon Award was bestowed on Mohammad Hudzaifah Reitz.

Present at the event were UiTM Sarawak rector Prof Datuk Dr Jamil Hamali and UiTM deputy rector for student affairs Associate Professor Dr Wan Akil Tuanku Abdullah.
