Tenants from Wisma Saberkas raise funds for the bereaved

-

KUCHING: A group of tenants from Wisma Saberkas raised RM7,653 to help buy caskets for the poor.

They handed over the cash donations to a coffin shop proprietor recently in a simple ceremony assisted and witnessed by volunteer social worker Lim Chee Haw.

Lim said the cash donations will be used to buy coffins when he receives urgent calls from poor and needy persons for departed members of their family.

“There is a Chinese belief that buying a coffin will bring reversal of bad fortune. Maybe the donors help to buy the coffins out of this belief, in order to revive or boost their business. Nonetheless, buying coffins for others is also a commendable act especially in the charity and welfare aspect.

“The poor and the needy, particularly those from the non- Muslim families, will face difficulty buying coffins as they do not have the money to get one for their departed family member. This act of buying coffin for others in fact eases the burden of the poor and the needy,” said Lim.

Poor families facing difficulties during bereavement can contact Lim at 082-248153 or 016- 8070388 about the coffins.

On another matter, Lim - who claimed to have assisted 638 needy individuals and organisations for the past 10 years — thanked a group of people from Kuching who recently answered his request to donate to the Sarawak Cheshire Home.

He said that from the funds raised by the donors, he was able to buy and deliver 50 10kg bags of rice (500kg in total) to the Sarawak Cheshire Home, which takes care of disabled people at its premises in Jalan Ong Tiang Swee here.

He disclosed the donors include the proprietor of 38 Food Street Sdn Bhd, and many other individuals.

“Thanks to them, we are able to buy so many packets of rice for Sarawak Cheshire Home, which takes care of many disabled persons. All of them contributed towards helping to reduce the operating expenses at Sarawak Cheshire Home,” he said.

Lim, a former marine police personnel, has now devoted his life to assisting the needy and organisations irrespective of racial and religious background.
