Bubok fishermen reminded to follow rules

-

MIRI: Fishermen are reminded to protect the eco-system and not to be too greedy by using fishing nets to harvest ‘bubok’ (shrimp).

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency ( MMEA) Sarawak chief First Admiral Ismaili Bujang Pit said; “Now we are having ‘bubok’ season. Everyone, especially fishermen and ‘belacan’ (shrimp paste) producers are reminded to adhere to the rules and regulation and follow the method approved and set by the Fisheries Department in harvesting the natural resources.”

In this context, Ismaili said the agency is empowered to take action against errant fishermen flouting the rules and regulation set by the Fisheries Department.

“Please apply the ( proper) method and use fishing nets recommended and approved by the Fisheries Department to protect this natural resource and ecosystem. This doesn’t mean we want to stop and interfere in activities,” he added.

Meanwhile, civilians and media practitioners are reminded to be more responsible in highlighting sensitive matters.

“Please check with agencies such as MMEA, the police and Fisheries Department. Don’t highlight the issues in print and on social media. The allegation of ‘no action taken’ projects a negative image on the government, not only on MMEA and other enforcement agencies and bodies.”

“Civilians ought to be more responsible and work together with us if there are any issues that can be sensitive. Please check and we work together to avoid giving the negative impression that Miri is a hotbed for illegal activities and immigrants which will scare tourists and visitors away.”
