‘Reject corruption and power abuse’
BELURU: Communities and community leaders must reject corruption by keeping it and the abuse of power at bay on the ground.
Assistant Minister for Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil gave this advice when officiating at the ADUN N 76 Marudi and Malaysian Anti- Corruption Commission ( MACC) with Beluru Community awareness programme at Beluru community hall yesterday.
He told community leaders, village and longhouse chiefs, civil servants, leaders of NGOs and youths that the impact of corruption, crimes and abuse of power affects individuals, families, community and country.
“There should be cooperation to ensure administration of district, particularly Beluru, is carried out efficiently, transparently and fairly with the right mindset,” he said.
He hoped the programme will raise greater awareness among the 300 participants of the importance of integrity and make it their culture in every action and transaction.
Penguang said civil servants, community leaders and village chiefs should ensure government funds are utilised optimally.
The programme was also to change the attitude of the target groups to be sincere, honest and not susceptible to inefficiency, misappropriation, power abuse and corruption.
He supported MACC’s corruption-free drive, saying it was one of the initiatives to promote good governance, and raise the people’s confidence and trust in leaders and the government.
Present at the function were MACC state director Dato’ Badrul Shah Norman, officers from Miri, Marudi District Council chairman Edward Mendai, councillors, representatives from the district office, community leaders and other stakeholders in Beluru District.
A round table discussion was held in the afternoon by MACC with heads of government departments, community leaders and village chiefs.
