SIBU: United People’s Party ( UPP) Community Service Board ( Sibu) will forward the proposal for the new ‘ Pasar Malam’ at Market Road to Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) next week.

Disclosing this to The Borneo Post yesterday, its board chairman Dato Andrew Wong said construction of the night market will start once approved by SMC.

The cost for the project is budgeted at RM1.5 million to RM2 million.

“The funding is there while the duration for the project depends on conditions at the site - probably between six and nine months,” Wong said.

SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said once the proposal is received, they will discuss it with a standing committee.

The idea to construct a new ‘ Pasar Malam’ at Market Road here is to transform and bring it into the 21st century to entice the young population.

Accor d ing to Wong, the present location at Butterf ly Garden was not really suitable for a night market due to space constraint that gave rise to traffic congestion.

He said the idea was to accommodate the present number of stalls including sufficient space for tables and chairs per food stall.

The a rea would be more organised and spacious.

Wong reiterated that the whole upgrade and redevelopment was to bring the ‘ Pasar Malam’ into the 21st century so it would draw the young population crucial to its growth as in Taiwan or Thailand.

UPP Community Service Board ( Sibu) recognised that Sibu’s night market was one of the icons of the town.

UPP Community Service Board ( Sibu) was prepared to wholly fund this project and hand it over to SMC as a project for the people of Sibu, he said.
