Woman, daughter killed when car crashes into back of stationary lorry
KUCHING: A woman and her young daughter were killed early yesterday when their car slammed into the rear of a stationary lorry in Sri Aman.
The impact of the 2.15am incident at KM52 Jalan Sri Aman- Kuching also injured the woman’s husband and their two other daughters.
Police have identified the deceased as Jamayiah Morni, 32, and Juma Atun Khorfijah Mohamad Rezal, aged two years and seven months.
The family- of-five was making their way to Sarikei to visit a sick relative when their sedan crashed into the rear of a Sibu-bound lorry, whose driver and two attendants had parked on an overtaking lane with the intention to secure the tarpaulin to cover the cargo.
State Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department deputy chief DSP Bingkok John said: “Initial investigation found that those in the lorry had carelessly stopped their vehicle without placing an emergency triangle or any sign to warn other motorists.
“Investigations are still ongoing and the incident has been classified under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Personnel from Sri Aman Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) were despatched to the scene to extricate the woman’s body pinned to the car’s front passenger seat.
A Bomba spokesperson said its personnel used a winch to extract the wrecked car from beneath the rear of the lorry before deploying various rescue tools to extricate the bodies.
“At the time of our arrival, the woman’s husband was craddling his dead toddler seated in the back of the vehicle with the couple’s two other daughters, aged six and 10.
“Bomba medical personnel attended to the three surviving family members who all suffered light facial cuts before sending them to Sri Aman District Hospital.”
