Abandoned house damaged by fire

-

KUCHING: An abandoned double- storey house at Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho was damaged by a fire that broke out on Thursday night.

No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident, despite initial fears of two squatters being trapped inside the concrete house.

A spokesperson of the Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) said two teams comprising 17 firemen were despatched to the scene – the first team arriving at 9.56pm.

“The situation was brought under control by 10.31pm and the flames put out by 11.18pm. The fire began on the upper floor of the house, damaging roughly 90 per cent of the structure,” estimated the spokesperson.

He added that after the situation was brought under control, firemen inspected the house and found no evidence of anyone being trapped inside.

Several members of the public said the house had been abandoned for the past decade and did not have any running water or electricity supply.

They claimed that two vagrants would stay at the house every now and then, which might have led to the initial belief that victims could have been trapped inside the house.
