KUCHING: This city will host the ‘Fifth International Seminar on Sports and Exercise Psychology’ next year.

The event to be funded under the Youth, Sports and Solidarity Ministry is organised by Sarawak Sports Corporation ( SSC) in collaboration with Institute of Teachers Education Tun Abdul Razak ( IPGKTAR) Kota Samarahan.

A renowned group of speakers from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines have been invited to share their insight and expertise about sports and exercise psychology with participants.

According to IPGKTAR’s Professionalism of Teacher Education Department head of research and innovation Dr Clarence Jerry, the seminar will run in May next year before the Malaysia Games (Sukma).

He said the holding of the seminar would be in line with the focus by the ministry and SSC in making Sarawak a sports powerhouse under the state’s Sixth Key Result Area ( KRA6).

He was also confident that this seminar – endorsed by the Asian- South Pacific Association of Sports Psychology – would contribute to enhancing the performance of Sarawak in sports, and also to building and preparing future generations of Sarawak athletes who would compete globally.

We also expect the seminar to boost Sarawak’s sport tourism. Dr Clarence Jerry, IPGKTAR’s Professionalism of Teacher Education Department head of research and innovation

“The ( seminar) venue will be in one of the main hotels in Kuching.

“The tentative date is May 2018, as suggested by Youth, Sports and Solidarity Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin, as after that it will be followed by Sukma,” he said yesterday.

Clarence disclosed that he and Dr Chin Ngien Siong from the Physical Education Department of IPGKTAR, paid a courtesy call on Manyin at the ministry’s office here last Wednesday to brief him on preparation for the seminar.

“Dato Sri Michael Manyin stated that the seminar would be able to create a return of investment to Sarawak, adding that investing in educating our coaches and athletes should be seen as an asset for leveraging our sports in the future.

“We also expect the seminar to boost Sarawak’s sport tourism,” he said.
