What you need to know about E-Com Y30

LAST week saw the launch of the E- Commerce Transforma­tion Plan or E- Com Y30 by Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.

E- Com Y3 0 ma rks t he beginning of an initiative to empower young Sarawakian­s as significan­t drivers for Sarawak’s transforma­tion into a developed, high-income state.

As part of the state’s measures in spurring socioecono­mic growth through digital economy, this initiative will equip the youth with the necessary technologi­cal strategy, knowledge, infrastruc­ture, resources and policy from now until the year 2030.

It is expected to make its start at the Digital Village in Kuching, which will then spread across other divisions in Sarawak. Ecom in this context encompasse­s e- communicat­ion, e- commerce and e-community.

The six objectives outlined to ensure E-Com Y30’s success are:

Develop rural and urban youth e-skills

To prepare Sarawakian youth for the digital economy, a one-stop digital channel will be provided, while various avenues will be made to ensure continuous engagement­s and exposure on digital matters. Apart from that, the youth will be provided with training and mentoring to develop their skills and talents. Nurture techno pr en eur ship Opportunit­ies will be created for young Sarawakian­s to start their own businesses, with tax incentives, loans, grants and investment­s provided, as well. The Digital Village that will be set up across the state will also facilitate young digital entreprene­urs by offering market- ready digital products and services. From there, these technopren­eurs will be able to promote their own startups.

Improve youth employment in digital sector

There will be more employment opportunit­ies and job matching services in the digital sector for young Sarawakian­s to be able to work in their home state upon graduation.

Promote digital innovation and creativity

As the digital economy is driven by innovation and creativity, instilling and promoting these skills will be done through local digital innovation competitio­ns and awards, provision of incentives for innovation and creative solutions, and facilitati­on of intellectu­al property protection.

Develop capability to enhance digital economy

Capability developmen­t involves enhancing employabil­ity skills that can lead to successful career progressio­ns. At this stage of Sarawak’s digital economy, research and developmen­t will be conducted on the digital workforce supply and demand. To enable employers to find potential work candidates, a database on the youth workforce in the state will be centralise­d.

Provide policy support to empower youth in digital economy

For the government to ensure a digital economy that benefits the future generation, clear policies will be formulated and implemente­d to support the economy’s ecosystem. This includes outlining strategies that will empower rural and urban young Sarawakian­s regardless of their economic and social background­s.
