KAPIT: More improvements are in the works for Belaga Jetty to make it safer and more comfortable for passengers.

Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat said improvements would be made to the staircase on the second and third platforms, while guard rails would also be installed along the sides to improve safety.

Jamit said this on Thursday when inspecting improvement works at the jetty, under the Sarawak Rivers Board ( SRB), which were completed recently.

The scope of work covered tar- sealing the walkway, adding benches for passengers, as well as installing a ticketing counter.

“The purpose is to check on the improvement works being carried out here for the convenience and comfort of the jetty users. I am happy that the job has been done properly to give a new facelift. Jetty users are happy because now it is more organised, neat and tidy,” he said.

“Previously, it was just a cement floor and hawkers here caused congestion and a mess at the jetty. Now the hawkers conduct their business away from the walkway and they are more organised. I am happy it is done properly.”

Jamit added that the government is serious about addressing issues of comfort and safety.

Boats from Belaga Jetty go to Belaga, Putai, Baleh River, Punan Bah, Melipis, as well as log ponds in the district.
