MIRI: Twenty- three new employers are compounded a total of RM18,500 since the launch of ‘Ops Kesan’ in April 1 by Social Security Organisation ( Socso) here.

Of the total, 18 were compounded under Section 4 of the Employee’s Social Security Act, 1969 for the delay in registering their companies and five under Section 5 of the Employee’s Social Security Act 1969 for the delay in registering their employees.

Its manager here, Hendera Saiful, said employers were given a grace period (whole of March) to register their workers or companies with Socso.

“We sent notices to employers in March to act and were given a chance to be registered. Now, we will not compromise. The errant employers have been compounded,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

He said the main excuse for employers not to register their employees was the lack of knowledge about Socso.

“Socso has been continuosly educating the employers and our enforcement officers are doing their best to get these employers to comply with the Act,” he added.

Hendera said in 2016, Socso Miri issued 51 compounds worth RM39,250 through 30 prosecutions.

“As of December 2016, there were 7,128 active employers and 143,861 active employees here. It is compulsory as of June 2016, for all employers with one or more workers to register with Socso to enjoy protection and benefits.

Under Section 5(1) of the Employees Social Security Act (amended 2016), employers who fail to register their workers with Socso as of June 1, 2016 will have to pay a compound of between RM500 and RM4,000.

Errant employers would be brought to court and may face a fine not exceeding RM10,000 or two years’ jail or both if found guilty and if they fail to pay the compound.

Meanwhile, employers can make monthly Socso contribution online via Socso website at www.perkeso.com.my or at www.iperkeso.my.
