BINTULU: The Gawai Dayak celebration can be a platform to strengthen the spirit of unity, cooperation and harmony among Sarawakians, said Samalaju assemblyman Majang Renggi at a dinner to launch the Gawai Dayak Bazaar Bintulu 2017 recently.

The event was organised by Persatuan Gagasan Anak Dayak Sarawak (GADS).

Majang said Gawai Dayak was not only celebrated by the Dayak community but also by other races in the state.

“Gawai Dayak is recognised as a national festival which is celebrated by people from different races, religions and cultural background.

“This is the essence of the 1Malaysia concept which is emphasised by our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak,” he said.

According to him, Sarawakians are lucky because the government is very concerned and committed in maintaining the cultural heritage of the various ethnics and tribes in the state.

“Thus I hope the people will continue giving their undivided support to the government of the day because it is vital to ensure the smooth implementation of development programmes in the state,” said Majang.

He also congratulated GADS Bintulu branch for organising the Gawai Bazaar Bintulu 2017 which will be held for two weeks starting May 1 at Naim Street Mall at Bintulu Paragon. Minister of Public Utilities Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom is expected to officiate at the event.

Majang noted that the event would enable the locals to get involved in business activities and it would give the visitors the opportunity to enjoy Dayak traditional cuisines apart from various kinds of handicrafts made by locals.

“The business activities will contribute to the socio economy of the local people especially the hawkers and traders.

“This Gawai Bazaar will be a meeting place for our people from all walks of life to foster greater unity and understanding,” he added.
