IKBN students repair polyclinic’s chairs

-

MIRI: National Youth Skills Institute ( IKBN) Miri students have repaired 28 sets of Tudan Polyclinic’s five- seater chairs under the institute’s community service programme.

Assistant Minister for Tourism Datuk Lee Kim Shin praised the students and teachers involved for their efforts.

“The dedication and spirit shown by those involved in this charitable act, proves that they really care about the needs of our local community,” he said during a ceremony to return the repaired chairs to Tudan Polyclinic yesterday.

“I believe that through the project, the students not only did something good for the community, but they also acquired skills in repairing these chairs.”

Lee, who is also Senadin assemblyman and an IKBN Miri advisory panel member, said IKBN Miri could share information about the institute through the project, while the local community would also benefit from their efforts.

“Such community programmes can also help the government save in terms of money, because instead of buying new chairs for the polyclinic, damaged chairs are repaired and reused. Recycling is very much encouraged because it is good for our environment,” he said.

“I know there are more damaged chairs that can be repaired at the hospital. As everyone knows, both the polyclinic and hospital are always crowded during peak times and there are not enough seats for the patients. This will be a wonderful new community project for IKBN students.”

He also announced a grant of RM3,000 to help IKBN Miri carry out the new project.

The IKBN Miri Community Service comes under the Anugerah Remaja Perdana Programme (ARP) where students are required to take part in a community service activity.

Awards are given based on hours spent on the projects – Bronze Award (15 hours), Silver Award ( 30 hours), and Gold Award ( 60 hours).

Meanwhile, Tudan Polyclinic head and family specialist Dr Maurice Steve Utap said seats at the polyclinic can be limited, especially during peak times.

“We are very thankful to IKBN Miri for this charitable gesture and I hope to have more collaboration with IKBN Miri in the future,” he said.
