STU Samarahan members urged not to delay submitting income tax returns

-

SERIAN: Members of Sarawak Teachers’ Union ( STU) Samarahan division were told not to procrastinate when declaring and submitting their income assessment for 2016.

This was said by Inland Revenue Board (IRB) customer service unit head Total Diah when delivering a talk on e-filing to the teachers during the union’s annual general meeting (AGM) at SJK Chung Hua hall here recently.

He said that as taxpayers, teachers should submit income tax return forms and pay the tax within the stipulated period to avoid late penalties or late payment. He also reminded union members to declare their previously earned income information correctly.

Additionally, Total emphasised that the deadline for the return form for individuals who do not conduct business ( BE form) is on April 30 while the e- filing submission deadline has been extended to May 15.

IRB documentation unit head Jennifer Lyn Majawin, encouraged teachers to submit their tax returns via the efiling system, which she said was currently popular due to its simplicity and user-friendliness.

Besides guiding the teachers on how to complete the autocalculating e-filing form, she also highlighted the significance of the final step in the e-filing process which was to confirm that all the information provided is true and subsequently to electronically sign the form by clicking on the ‘ tandatangan’ ( signature) and ‘hantar’ (send) buttons to complete the online submission process.

The teachers were told that passwords had a three-year validity and should they forget their password, they can duly contact IRB officers to refresh their password. The teachers were also briefed on chargeable income, tax exemption, tax deduction and tax relief, among others, for the 2016 year of assessment.

Jennifer also reminded teachers to complete the e-filing income tax assessments as soon as possible and to refrain from submitting income tax returns at the eleventh hour so as to avoid any unforeseen circumstances in the submission process.

Also present at the IRB talkcum-AGM were STU assistant secretary- general Brine Ganyor and STU assistant treasurergeneral Chong Chin Hua who later presented academic incentive awards to children who excelled in last year’s public examinations.
