SRDC: Kindly donate books to our five libraries

-

SIBU: Sibu Rural District Council ( SRDC) is again calling on the public to donate books to its five libraries in Durin, Rantau Panjang, Bawang Assan, Selangau and Sibu Jaya.

SRDC deputy chairman Robert Lau Hui Yew told reporters this before receiving donated books at See Hua office in Tuanku Osman Road here yesterday.

“The response has been quite good,” he said of a campaign by the council to get people to donate books – new or old.

“Keep giving us any genres of books, but we prefer story books or even comics to inculcate the reading habit.”

He said besides stocking up its libraries, the council will give the donated books to rural schools upon request.

So far, SRDC has received requests for books from two rural schools in Bawang Assan.

“We cannot deny that libraries of rural schools are in need of new books. The books they have are all very old and they do not have the budget to buy new ones,” he explained. He said books are much more needed in boarding schools.

Yesterday Kevin Lau represented his father Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming, who is the director cum secretary of See Hua Group, in handing over about 400 books to Robert.

Witnessing the event were Sibu Jaya assistant librarian Ahmad Zaidie Arbi and SRDC councillors Tiong Chee Jye, Teo Boon Siew and Halima Japar.

On April 11, SRDC collaborated with the See Hua Group to launch the ‘ Donate A Book’ campaign to help fill up the shelves of five libraries under SRDC.

Duringthetwo-monthcampaign, the public may drop the books they wish to donate at No. 40, Tuanku Osman Road.
