Week-old infant abandoned in front of house in Kubang Semang

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A male infant, beleived to be about week old, was abandoned in front of a woman’s house in Mengkuang Semarak, Kubang Semang, here yesterday.

Seberang Perai Tengah ( SPT) district police chief, ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said the infant, who was wrapped in a batik cloth, was discovered by a 76-year- old woman when opening her house door after hearing someone crying at 7.45am.

He said the infant, who was abandoned without any self identifica­tion, was sent to Hospital Seberang Jaya ( HSJ) for health examinatio­n and would be taken to the Social Welfare Department (JKM) for further action.

Further investigat­ion was still being carried out including tracking down the people who had left the baby boy in front of the senior citizen’s house and anyone with any informatio­n on the incident were urged to contact the nearest police station, he said here yesterday.

Meanwhile, Halijah Ariffin said the infant wrapped in a batik cloth was left on the floor under a chair in front of her house.

“At that time, I was watching television and clearly heard the sound of a baby crying.

“Then, I immediatel­y opened the door to find out and when I saw the infant covered in the batik cloth, I immediatel­y called my next- door neighbour.

“At first, I was scared but I took pity on the crying child and carried him,” she said. — Bernama
