Two movies from Steven Spielberg coming in 2018

-

HIS HISTORICAL movie about the Pentagon Papers affair, starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, has been slated for limited release in December followed by wide release January 2018, two months before “Ready Player One,” a feature fi lm that sees Steven Spielberg return to the science-fiction genre.

Announced in March under the since- abandoned title “The Post,” Spielberg’s fi lm about the Pentagon Papers now has a release date — even though the movie hasn’t yet been fi lmed.

The picture is scheduled for general release in the US on Jan 12. A limited release in a handful of theatres on Dec 22, 2017, will ensure eligibility for the 2018 Oscars, 20th Century Fox has announced.

The fi lm is based on one the fi rst and biggest major scoops in the history of American journalism. In 1971, the press revealed extracts from a 7,000-page top- secret report shedding light on the origins of the Vietnam War, containing evidence to suggest that the USA deliberately provoked the conflict.

Hanks and Streep will play two major fi gures of American journalism, Ben Bradlee and Kay Graham, who were editor and publisher of the Washington Post when the Pentagon Papers were published in 1971.

Spielberg’s second movie release of 2018 lands Mar 30, with “Ready Player One,” based on Ernest Cline’s dystopian novel of the same name. The fi lm tells the story of Wade Watts, a teenager who seeks refuge from harsh reality in the OASIS, a virtual world invented by the wealthy and eccentric James Halliday.

The fi lm marks Spielberg’s return to science fiction, a field that the director hasn’t explored since 2005’s “War of the Worlds.” — Relaxnews
