Low-lying areas in Ulu Niah flooded

-

MIRI: Low-lying areas in Ulu Niah were hit by flash floods yesterday following heavy rainfall on Monday night.

However, no evacuation was reported although day students from two longhouses were forced to stay at home because the road to their school was not passable.

The affected areas in the Subis district were Rumah Changgai and Rumah Belilie and SK Ranggong in Ulu Niah.

The monitoring team from Miri reported that both longhouses and the school were not accessible by cars but the road was still passable for four-wheel drive vehicles (4WDs) and larger vehicles.

The eight-hour rain on Monday night caused the river to swell and overflow, causing the water level at Rumah Changgai and Rumah Belilie to rise between one and three feet.

The primary school was under one to two feet of water, reported the state floods secretariat manned by the Civil Defence Force.

Meanwhile, TR Changgai Dali when contacted said SK Ranggong remained open yesterday to boarders although day students could not attend classes due to the flooded road.

He said it was impossible for small vehicles to pass through certain sections of the road.

Asked on the weather yesterday, he said there were no threatening clouds in the area.

“I can’t say it is good but the weather is fine today, but so was Sunday when it was so hot but the rain came in the night and we had flood,” he said.

The flood water was receding when he was contacted by The Borneo Post at about 3.30pm.

Subis District officer Hussini Bakir had been informed of the situation and the relevant authorities were monitoring the situation.
