MIRI: Fauzi Mob, a fisherman from Kampung Muhibbah, Kuala Baram invented two prawn peeling systems and a fishing net sorting machine.

He did this all on his own to make the life of a fisherman easier.

He said the idea for the prawn peeling machine came after seeing the process of drying the prawns and later putting them in a sack and hitting it to separate the shell and flesh of the dried prawns which takes about five to six days.

“I came up with my own invention with an old motor and a few old metal sheets, welding them together to make a prawn peeling machine,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday, adding it cost him about RM1,500.

Sarawak Fisheries Department director Belayong Nyuak and Miri Regional III chairman Buniamin Kiprawi came to see Fauzi’s invention recently which is also used by other villagers.

Fauzi said he felt happy with his invention as it saves time and energy.

According to him, the machine separates the flesh of the dried prawns in only a few hours which won the admiration of his fellow villagers who also wanted to use

the machine.

Last year, he added, he invented another prawn peeling machine which used a generator motor and needed fuel to operate it.

“But this second machine is more powerful and it takes less hours to process the dried prawns,” he pointed out.

“If possible, the Fisheries Department should provide funds so that the number of machines can be increased to four or five so that villagers in Kampung Muhibbah, Kuala Baram can make use of them to boost their incomes,” he said further.

He disclosed that even a fisherman from Bintulu wanted to purchase his second machine and the demand for the machine was there.

He said he also invented a sorting machine that can help fishermen arrange their net when pulled out from the sea, which sorts it in a good position inside the boat so that it can be easily put back into the sea for another fishing trip.

Fauzi, who also makes fibreglass longboats, thanked the government for helping to uplift the economy of the fishing community.
