World maths medallists treated to dinner

KUCHING: Sarawak medallists from the 14th World Mathematic­s Competitio­n ( WMC 2017) in Manila, the Philippine­s last month were treated to dinner on Wednesday.

Jad Haris Sabaruddin, 12, and Najmi Asyraaf Abdul Halim, 10, from SK Agama Datuk Haji Abdul Kadir Hassan won gold medals, while their teammates won four silver and 18 bronze medals from the competitio­n.

All the pupils attend Sakamoto Mathematic­s System Malaysia Sarawak.

“I fully support this programme as it is in line with the government’s policy particular­ly the STEM programme – science, technology, engineerin­g and mathematic­s,” said Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who was guest of honour at the dinner.

“To be an innovative nation, it is crucial for us to excel in science and technology.”

He added the need to master mathematic­s is crucial with the launching of the state’s digital economy programme.

“We aim to make Sarawak as the hub for Higher Order Thinking Mathematic­s in Malaysia,” said Sakamoto Mathematic­s System Malaysia Sarawak owner Haikal Zin.

The Sakamoto method is a systematic and logical approach to solving challengin­g wordproble­m sums, which is said to lead to Higher Order Thinking Skills.

WMC 2017 was organised by Sakamoto Japan and Singapore.

Besides Malaysia, participan­ts came from Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippine­s.
