Kapit District Council holds Local Agenda 21 event at Uma Kelap, Sungai Asap

KAPIT: The Kapit District Council ( KDC) is holding its first Local Agenda 21 programme for the year at Uma Kelap, Sungai Asap.

KDC walikota Philimon Nuing is leading a delegation of over 30 councillor­s and staff for the three-day programme, which ends today.

“With such a programme implemente­d by the council, it will enable community participat­ion in a local government led, communityw­ide, and participat­ory effort to establish a comprehens­ive action strategy for environmen­tal protection, economic prosperity and community well-being under the jurisdicti­on of the local council,” he said.

He explained that Local Agenda 21 is a process that facilitate­s sustainabl­e developmen­t at community level.

“It is an approach, based on participat­ion which respects the social, cultural, economic and environmen­tal needs of the present and future citizens of a community in all its diversity and which relates that community and its future to the regional, national and internatio­nal community of which it is a part of.”

Activities include a colouring contest for school children, beadwork competitio­n, preventive fogging, and a gotong-royong project to clean the longhouse compound.

The Health Department and Natural Resources and Environmen­t Board also conducted a talk.
