SIBU: The seniors of Hin Hua Poh Sen Association ( HHPSA) are praised for laying a good foundation for their young generation to cherish.

In giving the accolade, Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said the young generation should thus be thankful and be committed to bring the association to greater heights.

“The first batch of Hing Hua people settled here on May 22, 1912, they worked hard in harsh environments to eke out a living,” he said in his address at a gathering to mark the 105th anniversary of the clan’s arrival and Parents’ Day at Kingwood hotel here recently.

Wong was represented by Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming who read out his text of speech.

On a separate matter, he said filial piety has become the essence of Chinese culture to respect the elderly and parents.

“Filial piety and other traditional virtues are a Chinese culture to show our gratitude to elders who toiled hard to reap what we have today.

“They are more experienced than us, so we can learn a lot from them. Some people may think that their ideas are outdated, but they have accumulated wisdom through their life experience. We can learn from them if it is reasonable and if it is unreasonable, do not repeat the same mistakes,” he stated.

He said the younger generation could benefit immensely from the guidance of the elderly.

Earlier in his speech, HHPSA president So Teck Kee said the young generation should emulate and not forget their forefathers who worked hard and went through trials and tribulations to get what they had now.
