Rep tells bead weavers to upgrade their skills

-

MARUDI: Bead weavers need to be more creative and upgrade their skills in order to produce products that are more attractive and saleable.

Mulu assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala gave this advice when speaking at the closing ceremony of the Women Empowerment Programme at Baram Civic Centre here yesterday, organised by PBB Poyut/Nibong branch Women Movement.

The deputy speaker of State Legislative Assembly suggested that they learn from their counterparts in West Kalimantan, who are famed for their beautiful and attractive beadworks.

He said in this age of digital economy, their products can be sold online.

All they need to do, he added, is to set up a website where they can display their products to the wide global market.

Of course, they need to learn how to use the computer and the Internet first, he pointed out.

He also said the state government had allocated RM2 billion to upgrade Internet infrastructure and facilities, and by 2020 all areas in the state will have Internet coverage.

Also speaking at the function were state PBB Women Movement Supreme Council member and deputy chairperson of Mulu Division PBB Women Movement, Datin Catherine Awing, and PBB Mulu deputy chairman Datuk Robert Laing Anyie.

Present were Marudi district officer Mackos Sibong and Gerawat’s wife Datin Esther Balan Seling.
