Assistant minister calls for parents’ involvement in drug prevention programme

-

KUCHING: All drug prevention programmes among teenagers are wasted efforts without support and commitment from parents.

Assistant minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring) Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali said that parental support is an important element towards ensuring the success of such efforts or initiatives.

“For example, agencies, schools and the government are working hard to fight drug menace among teenagers but if parents and communities do not participate, it is like a worthless effort. Thus, I would like to call upon parents to support any such efforts,” she said at the Parents Motivation Talk and UPSR excellence awards incentive presentation at her service centre recently.

She explained that guiding children from an early age would ensure a bright future for the nation.

In reference to a recent house break-in in Samariang, the suspects caught were teenagers from the area who were also involved in drugs.

“This is what we don’t want. Because of drugs, our kids resort to stealing and crime to fund their addiction. Parents can play their part by checking on their children for signs that they are using drugs.”

At the event, Hasidah presented incentives from the Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu ( PBB) Samariang branch education bureau to 57 pupils who excelled in the 2016 Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah.

Organising chairperson cum PBB Samariang Women chief Hanifah Saed was also present at the event.
