DBKL’s plan to build chicken abattoir at Selayang daily market draws protests
KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur City Hall ( DBKL)’s plan to build a chicken abattoir at Selayang daily market has been met with objections from various parties who want it moved to another location to avoid long term problems.
The protest was made by 60 non-governmental organisations ( NGOs), including residents, charities and petty traders association from Taman Wilayah Selayang , Taman Sri Murni, Taman Sri Selayang and Kampung Selayang Lama.
Member of the Appeal to Cancel the Location of the Chicken Abattoir Committee, Abdul Aziz Mohd Alias said the DBKL project would create traffic congestion and health problems to the nearby residents.
“The government must take into account the environmental conditions and hold a dialogue with the residents before starting the project,” he told reporters here yesterday.
Abdul Aziz also questioned why the chicken abattoir would be build on a site originally meant for a multi- storey car park.
“The car park problem should be resolved as patrons of Selayang wholesale market cause congestion by parking their vehicles along Jalan Kuching,” he added.
Meanwhile, Selangor Cheshire Home president Datin Paduka Khatijah Sulieman said about 40 residents of the charity home feared the consequences of having an abattoir nearby due to the possibility of bird flu ( H5N1).
“The home is a refuge for many people with physical and mental disabilities who will be prone to ailments, a situation which the caregivers try to avoid at any cost.
“However, with the chicken abattoir, risk will increase and place the home in a dilemma,” she added.
Another fear is the inf lux of foreign workers as the abattoir would result in a domino effect.
“We are already facing problems with the current pool of illegal foreigners from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Vietnam at Selayang daily market.”
Khatijah urged DBKL to listen to their grievances and reconsider the decision to build the chicken abattoir in their neighbourhood. — Bernama
