Three drug enforcemen­t personnel injured in raid

BUTTERWORT­H: Three Penang National Anti- Drug Agency ( NADA) enforcemen­t personnel were injured after a scuff le broke out when a group of men were dissatisfi­ed over the detention of their friends in a raid here yesterday.

According to an agency source in the 7am incident, the men began taunting the NADA enforcemen­t personnel who were checking on visitors at an entertainm­ent centre in Seberang Jaya.

Earlier, during the raid, the group also tried to prevent the enforcemen­t personnel from carrying out their duties and even tried to help several of the friends to escape but the attempts failed.

As the NADA personnel were checking on documents and about to detain them, a fight broke out between the two parties which ended with three of the enforcemen­t personnel suffering injuries on their hands and bodies,” he said here yesterday.

He said the group was later detained by police for preventing civil servants from carrying out their duties and causing a riot.

Meanwhile, Penang NADA Enforcemen­t and Security chief Nasruddin Abdul Rahman, when contacted, confirmed the arrest and added that the men were dissatisfi­ed when their friends who were tested positive for drugs were detained.

He said in the operation which began at about 3.30am, checks were conducted on 95 individual­s on suspicion of taking drugs in the entertainm­ent outlet.

“A total of 29 men and 11 women, aged between 20 and 35, were detained after they were tested positive for drugs,” he said.

The operation was held in collaborat­ion with the Immigratio­n Department, the National Film Developmen­t Corporatio­n Malaysia ( Finas) and Seberang Perai Municipal Council ( MPSP). — Bernama
