Scotland stun Fiji at Paris sevens
PARIS: Scotland snapped a 13match losing run to stun Olympic champions Fiji 24- 0 and set up a Cup semi-final against England on the second day of the World Rugby Sevens Series in Paris on Sunday.
Jamie Farndale and Mark Robertson each scored a brace of tries for the Scots, also surprise victors over series leaders South Africa on Saturday, against an uncharacteristically sloppy Fijian side.
“We have some great individuals in the team with real pace, ball players and some big players,” said Robertson.
“We are a tight group, we have only missed out on small margins, but hopefully we can carry it on.”
Scotland will now meet England, 26-12 winners over the United States.
The other semi-final sees South Africa take on New Zealand, the Blitzboks having beaten defending champions Samoa 12- 0 thanks to tries from veterans Cecil Afrika and Werner Kok.
South Africa will be crowned series champions should they reach the Cup final at the Jean-Bouin stadium, the western Parisian home to Top 14 club and newly crowned European Challenge Cup champions Stade Francais.
Having notched up fou r tournament wins and played in seven consecutive finals, South Africa stand 25 points ahead of second- placed Fiji in the standings, with 22pts on offer for a tournament victory and just one round remaining, in London on May 20-21.
The All Black sevens, seeking a first tournament win of the season, saw off hosts France 140, DJ Forbes and Sione Molia crossing while Fiji-born France winger Virimi Vakatawa was sinbinned. — AFP
