Miri City Day do starts with flag-raising
MIRI: The 12th Miri City Day celebration commenced with a flag-raising ceremony in front of Miri City Council (MCC) building here yesterday.
At the event, mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang said for the past 12 years ever since it was upgraded to city status on May 20, 2005, Miri had undergone extensive transformation.
“During the course of celebrating our 12th anniversary of progress, prosperity and development, we still remember and are grateful to the happening team headed by Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan for laying down the foundation and subsequently transforming Miri from a small town to a city today.
“I would also like to extend my sincere appreciation to all the councillors and council staff for their dedication and contribution all this while which have enabled us to receive various awards and recognition within the country as well as from abroad,” he said in his officiating speech at the event.
He pointed out that the flagraising ceremony is a solemn and significant event which serves as a reminder to MCC members that they have gone far, carrying with them the glory and achievements.
“Nevertheless, we should not be complacent and should, in fact, strive harder to upkeep our good image and constantly being reminded that our mission in the council is to serve and provide a better living environment to our stakeholders, that is the people in Miri,” said Yii.
Yii expressed his gratitude of having a team of very committed and dedicated councillors, whose commitment is shown by their readiness to attend meetings and functions of the council as well as their willingness to serve the community in particular through programmes organised by the Resident Committees and Local Agenda 21 & Community Development Committee.
“Such programmes are being incorporated into the council’s committees set up with the intention to provide effective outreach programmes to the local communities.
“The councillors and I are equally grateful to have a capable administration comprising various sections and units who are willing to offer their service, assistance and support to the council’s standing committees which has enabled us to navigate the council smoothly and efficiently towards a new era.”
Nevertheless, Yii acknowledged that it is normal that there are challenges ahead of them which they must deal with and overcome.
“We do have the capability and are ready to serve. However, what I expect from all of us here is the passion which is the key ingredient to produce the cake of success, bringing further higher achievements and destiny,” he said.
Being the local authority in Miri, Yii said Miri City Council will always welcome constructive suggestions as the development of Miri requires participation of the people of Miri.
“On behalf of MCC, we pledge to serve all the people of Miri regardless of race, culture, religion, class or gender so that we can all move forward to achieve our vision for Miri to be ‘The Most Liveable Resort City’.
“It is my hope that we can be unified and work diligently to bring the council to a higher level to realise our vision,” he added.
Also present were deputy mayor Julaihi Mohamad as well as council members and heads of departments and sections.
