Job Fair receives good response from employers, job seekers

KUCHING: The Job Fair organised by the State Labour Department at the Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) here received an overwhelming response both from employers and job seekers.

Minister of Human Resources Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem, who made a walkabout at the fair yesterday, expressed his gratitude to local employers for their participation, which led to the success of the programme.

“I’m so satisfied with the turnout, as some 22 employers have participated in this fair, offering a total of 1,178 jobs in the various sectors from 10am until 8pm today.

“As at 11am, 13 job seekers have been offered jobs by six different companies, where they can report for work as early as next Monday,” he told a press conference at the UTC here yesterday.

Riot said the Job Fair was a very important programme organised by his ministry because it matched the job seekers and employers on the spot.

He said during the matchmaking processes the job seekers were interviewed by the potential employers upon registration, and successful candidates were offered the job on the spot.

He said the one-day Job Fair was held simultaneously at 11 UTC locations throughout the nation, involving 400 employers offering a total of 25,000 jobs in the various sectors.

Riot said the next Job Fair, which will also be held simultaneously throughout the country, is scheduled to be held in September.

Aside from the Job Fair, he said his ministry had also organised a state level Career Exploration, which began in Serian and ended in Betong.

“In that exploration, which was held from March 11 to 19 this year, some 83 employers were involved, seeking for potential employees to fill up some 4,184 vacancies in the various sectors.

“A total of 1,009 applicants were offered jobs by the various employers during the exploration,” he said.

Riot noted that both the Job Fair and the Career Exploration programme were initiatives taken by his ministry to help match unemployed graduates and school leavers with potential employers.
