Quality human capital essential for economic success of nation
BINTULU: Education in Malaysia, built upon the Malaysian National Education Philosophy, is an ongoing effort to develop high quality human capital, said Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
He said it is achieved via a holistic and integrated manner to produce individuals who are intellectually, spiritually and physically balanced.
“It is known that high quality human capital is essential in stimulating and achieving economic success for the nation either at domestic or international level.
“Therefore, for the benefit of the nation, our education system aims to assist students in both achieving and developing their potential regardless of their ethnic or religious background,” he said when officiating at Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) Bintulu chapter’s 14th annual general meeting and academic excellence award presentation 2017 at Li Hua Hotel yesterday.
His text of speech was read by Pemanca Datuk Dr Francis Toh.
According to Tiong, he believed that with the support and cooperation of all exemplary teachers, they can work in this manner to strengthen national unity and work towards building an advanced nation.
“National unity is one of the aspirations of our education system and throughout the years, various initiatives have been carried out for our students who hail from different socio-economic backgrounds, religions and ethnicities to understand, accept and cherish such diversity,” he said.
He added the national education should be able to provide ample opportunities for students to appreciate such diversity and share their varied experiences and aspirations to further develop and strengthen national unity.
“With this I remind our teachers that we must always be aware of current affairs and the environment around us.
“We must understand that certain quarters with extreme beliefs are always finding ways to challenge and threaten our precious national unity,” Tiong said.
He prayed and hoped that the relentless effort in carrying out the heavy but worthwhile burden of developing high quality human capital for the nation be blessed at all times, leaving behind a lasting legacy for future generations.
STU Bintulu chairlady Soo Siew Huong in her welcoming speech said to-date STU Bintulu chapter has a total of 1,067 registered members.
“Our initial target last year is to get more than 1,100 members which hopefully with hard work and commitment we can achieve by 2018.
“With more members, we will be stronger and united and I urge all current members to further promote the importance of joining STU especially among new teachers regardless of race and religion,” said Soo.
She said STU committee is ever ready to conduct talks on STU’s roles and advantages of becoming a member, especially to attract more teachers to join the union.
“Our members play an active role, we are not just a teacher in school, but give ideas to the government and fight for the welfare of fellow educators,” Soo said.
Teaching is more challenging nowadays thus she urged all teachers to be more creative and innovative in their teaching method.
“We are the agent of change so we must continue to change from the ordinary to extraordinary approach, and be futuristic with world class thinking,” Soo added.
During the event, a total of 45 excellent students received cash incentives from STU Bintulu chapter.
Also present were Bintulu education officer Fred Entau, Sebauh education officer Tero Bayel, Tatau education officer Mohadi Mobin and STU secretary general Yong Ing Thung.
