105 players at CMS Miri tourney

MIRI: Miri Squash Associatio­n (MSA) president Yeo Yaw Lee is looking forward to the associatio­n helping to grow more and better players for the state and nation.

The recent upgrading of a singles court for doubles at the Pei Min Miri Squash Academy meant that Miri now join Kuching in having doubles squash courts.

Yeo was speaking to the media during the official opening of Cahaya Mata Sarawak (CMS) Miri Leg Annual Squash Tournament at the academy yesterday.

Besides Pei Min, squash players in Miri can also have access to facilities at Gymkhana Club of Miri and SK Jalan Bintang.

Yesterday’s event was officiated by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin. He said Miri can be a centre of excellence for squash as the city now has the most number of squash courts in Sarawak.

He thanked the corporate sector for their sponsorshi­p in boosting sports developmen­t in the state.

Lee, who is also Senadin assemblyma­n, then announced a government grant in the form of Minor Rural Project (MRP) allocation worth RM10,000 to Pei Min Miri Squash Academy for its training programme.

A total of 105 players from Miri, Sibu and Kuching are taking part in the three-day tournament.

Also present was Piasau Assemblyma­n Datuk Sebastian Ting.
