Unrepentant serial pick-pocketing couple caught again

-

KUCHING: A married couple – arrested several times in the past for pick- pocketing – was nabbed on Monday for the same offence at Kota Sentosa Ramadan Bazaar.

According to sources, the 51-year- old husband and his 47year- old wife from Kampung Semariang Lama in Petra Jaya were caught red- handed while simultaneously trying to steal from an elderly man and a woman around 5pm.

“The suspect ( husband) was groping into the backpack of an elderly man while his wife was trying to pick-pocket the handbag of a woman. They were noticed by the public and handed over to police for further action,” the source said.

When contacted yesterday, Padawan district police chief Supt Aidil Bolhassan confirmed the arrests, saying the suspects have been detained in the police lockup for further action.

“Their modus operandi is to target a victim with an open backpack or handbag. One of them will push against the victim while the other takes the opportunity to steal his/ her belongings,” he explained.

“The husband has nine criminal records, including five arrests for pick- pocketing, while the wife has six criminal records which includes two arrests for pick- pocketing,” he added.

Both suspects were remanded on Monday for further investigation under Section 379 of the Penal Code.
